How Handmade Saltillo Tiles Are Made
Saltillo tiles are made using locally sourced clay found only in this region of Mexico. The clay’s mineral composition produces durable terracotta tiles that are particularly suitable for floors.
Each tile is formed by hand in wooden moulds and left to dry naturally in the sun before being fired in traditional pit kilns fuelled by scrap wood. The position of the tiles within the kiln and subtle differences in the clay influence the final colour and surface texture.
This natural firing process creates the beautiful variation in tone and surface patina that gives handmade Saltillo tiles their distinctive character. Occasionally, a cat’s paw print may even appear in a tile, a small reminder of the traditional handmade process.

Do Saltillo tiles need sealing?
Yes. Saltillo tiles are supplied as unsealed terracotta and must be sealed during installation to protect them from moisture and staining.
How do you clean Saltillo tiles?
Once sealed, Saltillo tiles can be maintained by sweeping regularly and mopping with a pH-neutral cleaner.
When will my tiles be delivered?
Milagros holds stock in the UK, and delivery is typically 5–7 working days. Orders can also be collected from our London shop or Bristol warehouse.
Can I order samples?
Yes, however, we don’t send 400mm X 400mm tiles through the post due to their fragility instead, we recommend ordering 150 X 150mm tiles.
