Traditional Handmade Encaustic Tiles
Encaustic tiles have a long history in architectural decoration, with early examples dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Milagros encaustic cement tiles are handmade using techniques developed in the nineteenth century and still practised by skilled artisans today.
Unlike ceramic tiles, encaustic tiles are not glazed or kiln-fired. Instead, coloured mineral pigments mixed with marble dust and cement are carefully poured into patterned moulds. A dry mix of lightweight concrete is gently spread over the pigmented layer. The tile is then compressed using a hydraulic press, creating a decorative layer with depth that becomes an integral part of the tile.
Milagros works with a specialist workshop in Mexico that has been producing handmade encaustic tiles for about a century across three generations.
Because each tile is made by hand, subtle variations in pigment, colour distribution, and surface texture naturally occur. When installed across a floor or wall, these variations create a rich and characterful surface.
All encaustic tiles are stocked in the UK, allowing reliable delivery across the UK and internationally.

Handmade Encaustic Tiles for Floors and Walls
Handmade encaustic cement tiles are suitable for a wide range of interior architectural applications, including:
- Kitchen floors and splashbacks
- Bathroom floors and walls
- Hallways and entrance floors
- Fireplaces and hearths
- Restaurants, cafés, and commercial interiors
Because the decorative pattern is embedded within the tile rather than printed on the surface, the design does not wear away over time. Many historic encaustic floors have lasted for more than a century.
Once correctly sealed, encaustic tiles become hard-wearing surfaces suitable for both residential and commercial interiors. Please read our installation guide for more information.
They also combine beautifully with Milagros glazed terracotta tiles, particularly when encaustic tiles are used as patterned flooring.
The Craft of Encaustic Cement Tiles
The making of encaustic tiles is a slow and highly skilled process. Artisans pour coloured cement and marble dust mixtures into brass frames that can hold cooky cutter steel molds to form a decorative pattern. A backing layer of dry mix concrete is then added before the tile is compressed in a hydraulic press.
Unlike ceramic tiles, encaustic tiles are cured naturally, first in a water bath and then in drying racks rather than fired in a kiln, allowing the concrete to harden gradually and develop its density and strength.
This process creates tiles with a soft matt surface and rich colour depth, qualities that have made encaustic cement tiles popular with architects and designers for more than a century.
