Some of Our Favourite Bathrooms Use Handmade Tiles
Bathrooms are places of sanctuary and of peace and quiet – the only room in the house where you get to lock the door for a few minutes, wake up with an early morning shower or luxuriate in the bath for hours or read your favourite book for days. It’s worth making yours as lovely as possible. Even in a small room, colour, texture and pattern can completely transform the space. Here are a few of our favourite bathrooms using Milagros tiles.
Warm White — Olivia Outred
Interior designer Olivia Outred used Milagros Mexican White handmade tiles to create this beautiful, intimate bathroom.
Choosing handmade tiles gives the room a warmth and life that can be difficult to achieve with a perfectly uniform, machine-made surface. The gently pillowed surface of each tile catches the light differently, creating subtle areas of light and shadow across the walls and avoiding the clinical feel that white bathrooms can sometimes have.
The large mirror reflects both the tiles and the light around the room, creating a greater sense of space while accentuating the variations in the handmade glaze.
Pink and Green — Pattern and Colour
One of my favourite bathrooms ever by Steph Wilson. The combination of Capelo Green patterned ceramic wall tiles and Pink Lace encaustic floor tiles in this bathroom is simply beautiful, creating an unexpected and slightly esoteric interior in shades of pink and green.
The patterned wall tiles stretch from floor to ceiling, enveloping the room in colour and pattern, while the soft pink encaustic floor provides a calm counterpoint. Together, the two very different surfaces create a harmonious space that feels playful and tranquil at the same time.
It is a wonderful example of how seemingly contrasting colours and patterns can work together when their tones complement one another. One feels like one has stepped into a magical woodland dwell.
Understated Opulence — Arbour Green
This bathroom by Holland Green Interiors uses just a small number of Arbour green tiles as a simple accent on a bath panel.
Despite the relatively small area of tiling, the rich green and decorative pattern immediately change the character of the room. Against the simplicity of the surrounding wall, they create a sense of understated opulence — decorative and luxurious, but still refined. The Arbour green has travelled across time and the globe; the design can be found in classic antiquity.
It is also a lovely reminder that you don't need to tile an entire bathroom to make an impact. A carefully chosen area of handmade tiles can shift the mood of the room.
Be Bold with Pattern — Russell Loughlan
We love this bathroom by Russell Loughlan of The House on Dolphin Street. He has used Arbour blue, bordered with Sierra Azul and Sierra Esquina and Beatrix. The abundant use of blue and white pattern reflects the Chinese influences found in the tile designs, beautifully complemented by the bamboo-framed mirror.
Mexican interiors have a wonderful tradition of embracing decoration, colour and pattern, and Loughlan's confident combination of different designs reminds us that we don't have to be stick-in-the-muds when it comes to decorating our bathrooms. Mixing patterns can create a room that feels joyful, individual and full of character.
The red towels beneath the twin sinks provide an accent of colour against the blue and white tiles. They are also a reminder that towels and other soft furnishings can become part of the overall colour scheme — either complementing the colours of your tiles or providing a bold, inexpensive and changeable contrast.
Above all, this bathroom interior demonstrates that sometimes more is more.
